This is not a statement from Plentyoffish, i'll post something in the morning. This is a personal post about what it feels like to be hacked / extorted and the intense pressure and stress you are put under. Not to mention how annoying it is to have someone constantly harassing and trying to scare your wife at all hours of the day. I think a slept a total of 2 hours a night for a week ... .. Plentyoffish was hacked last week and we believe emails usernames and passwords were downloaded. We have reset all users passwords and closed the security hole that allowed them to enter.
This was an incredibly well planned and sophisticated attack. Chris Russo a hacker from Argentina who hacked Piratebay and signed up to plentyoffish several days before I had to go to a conference. The attacks started as I was on an airplane to attend the internet dating conference in Miami. It took Chris Russo 2 days to break in; he didn't even try to hide behind a proxy, signed up under his real name and executed the attacks while logged in as himself. At midnight Miami time my wife gets a call from Chris Russo that plentyoffish has been hacked into and that Russians have taken over his computer and are trying to kill him, and his life is in extreme danger and they are currently downloading plentyoffish's database. Chris is trying to create a sense of panic. I listened in the background and I closed the breach if indeed there was one while my wife was on the phone and then I immediately ordered an investigation. Over the next 24 hours we got a lot of voice mails from Chris Russo frantically wanting to talk to us.
Next my wife gets a phone message from a reporter Brian Krebs who used to work at the Washington Post asking about a security breach on POF. I have my COO call and find out what's up. My COO says Brian claims he doesn't really know anything and Chris is a harmless 23 year old kid from Argentina who he has talked to once before. Brian said Chris contacted him saying plentyoffish had a breach. Then I have my director of engineering call Chris. A bit later I am on the phone with Chris as well. Chris tries to create intense sense of pressure and urgency, saying I have to either fly to Argentina or Washington DC so he can help me stop these attacks from the Russians. Hey says the Russians have complete access to everything including our bank accounts, and they want to steal about $ 30 million from a string of dating sites including ours. Not only that, he tells us 5 or 6 other dating sites in the industry have been breached, and he gives me what he claims is the administrative password for a dating company I won't name but it's very famous. He claims the reason he knows all this is because Russians have taken over his computer and he can see everything they are doing
I stay up all night in Miami with other members of the team in Vancouver and we reset all our passwords and look through the code etc. Once back in Vancouver we get another message from Brian Krebs saying Chris asked him to create an account on plentyoffish, and when he did, he read him back his username and password. Previously Chris wanted me to fly to Washington DC which is also where Brian lives. Imagine my shock after checking Chris Russo's facebook profile I find Brian Krebs come up as his friend. This sent major alarm bells ringing - the guy trying to extort me is friends with the former reporter? Now that it's mostly over I don't think Brian Krebs has anything to do with these two.
